Sonlig means sunlight in Afrikaans. The name reflects what we do: shining a light on the stories behind South African wine. The idea took shape during travels through the Cape, visiting wine estates where hospitality, landscape and craftsmanship come together — places where wine is inseparable from history, family stories and entrepreneurship.

At Sonlig, it is not about lists or judgements, but about attention. We visit estates, walk through vineyards, speak with owners and winemakers, and try to understand what makes a place truly distinctive. South African wine has long been underexposed, while behind every bottle there is a story worth telling.

We offer a carefully curated selection — a snapshot of a wine world that is constantly evolving. With our book, we hope to inspire readers and travellers: to open a bottle they do not yet know, to discover an unfamiliar region, or to return in thought to a journey that has stayed with them ever since.
